  • MINOR SUPER-VILLAIN 168: DR KRUG

    (Blue Beetle Comics 008, 1941)

    Dr Krug! I cannot tell you his motives, because he never goes into them! Dr Krug! He wants to destroy NYC York City , and he’s going to do it with gorillas! Dr Krug! Specifically, explosive gorillas! Dr Krug!

    That’s really all there is to the guy. He somehow figured out how to make time-bombs out of gorillas and went from there. As far as I can tell from the action of the story his plan is to have the gorillas get arrested and then blow up the police stations they are taken to. This is simultaneously one of the weirdest and least cost-effective ways of destroying a city that I have ever encountered – I think he may have started with about eight gorillas, to boot. If he hadn’t fallen in the gorilla pit and exploded he would have been having a long hard talk with his gorilla supplier before long.

  • MINOR SUPER-VILLAIN 139: IVAN BORLOFF

    MINOR SUPER-VILLAIN 139: IVAN BORLOFF

     (Adventure 061, 1941)


    Ivan Borloff is a strange combination of things: a scientist with a super airship (the Cylindecraft) and a metal-destroying ray, he rains destruction down on New York City in pursuit of his goal of conquering the US (and by implication, the world), but also, it’s implied that he is affiliated with *foreign powers*, ie, fascists – possibly ones who didn’t quite know what they were getting into. 

    His name ringing more Russian might mean that he is a rare pre-Cold War Commie villain, but a more likely explanation is plain old lazy naming – German, Russian… it’s all basically the same, right?

    MINOR SUPER-VILLAIN 139: IVAN BORLOFF

     (Adventure 061, 1941)

  • MINOR SUPER-VILLAIN 110: THE NORNS

    (More Fun Comics 060, 1940)

    Here’s the thing about these guys: they probably aren’t the Norns and they probably don’t call themselves the Norns. They’re three giant purple guys who hang out in a cave in the Catskills and send a flying saucer full of little green guys to attack NYC, ostensibly to conquer it. But! Earlier in the story:

    … Dr Fate is reading a book about the Fates when Inza comes to tell him about the saucer attack, and then jumps to the conclusion that they are the same as the purple guys when he sees three people together. It’s weird!

  • MINOR SUPER-VILLAIN 110: THE NORNS

    A mine owner using zombie labour, which is at best morally questionable, but also he planned to undermine New York and collapse it into a pit, then rule the ruins, which is worse.

    Dr Occult dropped a mine on him, which is why it’s such a surprise when he shows up in my upcoming Dr Occult miniseries – back from the dead by his own dark will, the Master of Corpses teams up with the rest of his Golden Age rogues gallery in a bid to destroy their old foe once and for all.
