    More goon/ more fascist

    The Band AKA the Anti-American Band AKA the Un-American Band are yet another take on the German-American Bund distinguished by the fact that they were infiltrated by Bruce Blackburn – Counterspy so a) they were one of the few gangs of fascist goons to last more than one adventure and b) they were the villains that Blackburn created his shortlived alter-ego the Destroying Demon to fight (Feature Comics 038-041, 1940-1941)

    The Advance Front! Fascist agitators who seem to be actual Nazis, or at least be using actual swastikas. I hesitate to call this refreshing but it’s at least simpler to call someone a Nazi than a crypto-fascist Nazi-alike German analog. Beat to tar by USA, the Spirit of Old Glory (Feature Comics 046, 1941)

    Hold Tight America is our first example of the fascist group that is calling for peace in order to advance their plans for war before being foiled by Doll Man (Feature Comics 049, 1941)

    The Hand is just as halfassed and slapdash as these chumps usually are but I’ll say this for them: they capture and almost manage to assassinate not just the Black Condor but FDR too! (Crack Comics 019, 1941)

  • MINOR SUPER-VILLAIN 365: THE BLACK TIGRESS

    (Military Comics 004, 1941)

    The Black Tigress is a Gestapo agent operating in Egypt with the goal of capturing or destroying the Suez Canal with her army of little Perter Lorre looking Nazis. Nothing particularly remarkable, but she does have the distinction of being the first of many, many minor super-villains to be faced by the Blackhawks.

    She is also the first of many femmes fatale to be encountered by Blackhawk himself, and Will Eisner creation (and Howard Chaykin adoptee, for that matter) that he is, he will encounter many. She is even the first of those to fall in love with Blackhawk, not that it turned out well for her: her love not reciprocated, she dies while trying to murder the object of her affections.

    Another Nazi spy-cell headed by a guy in a cloth mask called the Leader, this time in Switzerland for a bit of variety. (Captain America Comics 009, 1941)

    Having just read a year’s worth of Jumbo Comics, I can tell you that this guy here, name of Sam Bradford, is the closest thing to a super-villain in them and it’s mostly because of the decent outfit. He’s an agent who kills a producer or something because of professional reasons – strictly snoozeville. (Jumbo Comics 033, 1941)

    This creep is Mark Giddings, who kidnaps Eve Scott, daughter of NYC Mayor Scott because she turned down his advances. Somehow he thought that extorting the mayor to resign via threats of dismembering his daughter would net him both the job and the girl but in reality he just got socked by Bulletman. (Master Comics 011, 1941)

    This fella answers to the name of Operator G-6, and he’s the very first foe faced by patriotic hero Minute-Man. Also the first person summarily thrown off a train to his death by Minute-Man. (Master Comics 011, 1941)

  • MINOR SUPER-VILLAIN 329: THE MAD VIOLINIST

    (Human Torch v1 005a, 1941)

    The Mad Violinist! Not especially mad, aside from being a fascist fanatic. More of a fiddler than a violinist, too – perhaps Nazi Super-Agent HR got mixed up when assigning codenames and swapped his with the Fiddler and vice versa.

    Name mixup or no, the Mad Violinist makes quite a splash when he attacks a military parade in NYC and kills potentially hundreds of soldiers and onlookers – it’s always a real pain to estimate such things from context, but at least 40 people bought it based on the images provided.

    Such crimes could not stand, of course, and the Violinist is swiftly tracked down by Jeff Mace, aka the Patriot, who learns that much like the Armless Tiger Man, the Nazis weaponized him after an accident that left him unstable and dangerous. 

    In conclusion, the best part of this story is the fact that the Mad Violinist has to drink BONE SOFTENING CHEMICALS to keep from killing himself and I might just get that on a coffee cup.

    MINOR SUPER-VILLAIN 328: THE NAZOMBIES

    (Human Torch v1 005a, 1941)

    This is kind of a weird one in a few ways, the first being that the foundation of the plot is that a) Namor the Sub-Mariner and the Angel both own Caribbean islands and b) that they are good enough friends for Namor to pay the Angel a visit. During this visit one of Namor’s servants bursts in and promptly drops dead in an effort to deliver a note cryptically warning of a zombie takeover.

    Namor takes off on his own and indeed! Zombies have taken over his island! Kind of!

    I mean, even by 1940s standards of zombie these are clearly either costumed goons or some sort of monstrous humanoid group. They’re not explicitly identified as fancy dress Nazis until the third-to-last panel, but come on. Buncha goose-steppers establishing military bases and concentration camps across the Caribbean? That’s Nazis.

    The Nazombies mostly employ conventional weaponry but seem to have hit up the “underwater” section of the Comic Book Nazi Superweapon department, as not only are they fielding undersea tabks but these extremely cool personal shark submersibles

    This is, by the way, your go-to comic if you have ever wanted to see the Golden Age Angel get crucified by a bunch of Nazi zombies. Not to worry though: Namor rescues him and from then on it’s strictly Nazi-punching time.

    I don’t reckon that the Nazombies have enough potential to be BRUNG BACK but it really seems like the shark-sub tech is ripe for revival in the hands of coastal raiders or something. Once such a revolutionary technology is unleashed it can’t be put back in the bottle.
