    Green Lantern:

    Hawkgirl: 

    Hawkgirl is shot in the back by an agent of Mister X while acting as a Hawkman decoy on her very first outing in costume (All-Star Comics 005, 1941)

    Hawkman:

    Shot in the left shoulder by Alexander the Great. (Flash Comics 002, 1940)

    Shot in – I think – the left shoulder again while working on the case of the Hand. (Flash Comics 015, 1941) 

    Shot in the right shoulder for a change, as Carter Hall. (Flash Comics 019, 1941) 

    Perhaps Hawkman preferentially takes bullets to the left shoulder because he took an arrow there during his original incarnation as Prince Khufu. (Flash Comics 001, 1940)  

    Speaking of Prince Khufu, he (along Princess Shiera, off-panel) is famously stabbed by the evil Hath-Set. Hey, a fatal wound is still a wound. (Flash Comics 001, 1940)

    the Human Torch:

    During one of the periods in which the Human Torch is being hunted by the law, he takes a police slug to his right arm. (Marvel Mystery Comics v1 011, 1940)

    the King: 

    Gets his scalp creased by a bullet. (Flash Comics 003, 1940)

    And again a year later. (Flash Comics 016, 1941)

    Aquatic toughie the Scarlet Mermaid gives the King a fashionable bullet wound in the left shoulder while making her escape. (Flash Comics 019, 1941)

    the Pied Piper: 

    Shot in the right arm while wrasslin’ with the Black Panther’s panther. (Cat-Man Comics 004, 1941)

    Just some of my favourite alien designs ever: the Kriglo AKA Martian Spider-Men (Flash Comics v1 024, 1941)

    Super Hero Costume Party:

    Hawkman attends a costume party with Shiera Sanders as Hawkgirl. Though not the first time she wore the costume, this does mark the start of the two as a crime-fighting duo ongoing, no matter what stinky ol’ Hawkman says. (Flash Comics v1 024, 1941)

    Rick Raleigh might have intended to attend this party as the Red Bee in that classic cheeky move, but ended up getting mixed up in a murder and attending as a different guy dressed as the Red Bee. (Hit Comics 014, 1941)

    Really enjoy the selection of creature that inhabit the inner earth in the year 50029 CE: Mud Men, Rock Men, hot ladies, and down at the very bottom: guys with beards. (Hit Comics 003, 1940)

    Quality comics with another entry for the list of increasingly unhinged patriotic heroes: Don Glory, the xenophobic jingoist former boxer (Hit Comics 008, 1941)

    After an adventure in the lost city of Dravidia, Hawkgirl (well, Shiera Sanders, a few months out from being Hawkgirl) gets a cool brooch!

  • SUPER-VILLAIN YEARBOOK: HATH-SET 1940

    What was Hath-Set up to in 1940?

    That’s actually a tricky question, because Hath-Set is a tricky character! Technically, he did absolutely nothing in 1940, because he died somewhere in the 1200s BC. Because, yes, Hath Set is mixed up in the unholy mess that is Hawkman and Hawkgirl’s origin story.

    Of course, it didn’t start out complicated: Hath-Set was an evil priest of Anubis who murdered Prince Khufu and his lover Shiera and then they all got reincarnated some 3000 years later to do it all over again. Nice and simple. But comic books are comic books, so all three of these fools have been reincarnated more times than any reasonable person would care to count, including retroactively as characters like the Silent Knight. Hath-Set himself doesn’t always show up – his piddly number of appearances in any incarnation would probably net him the status of minor super-villain if he wasn’t such an integral part of the Hawks’ origin story.

    As for Doctor Hastor: he electrocutes passengers on the New York subway system in an attempt to extort the city for big bux but before he can get any further Hawkman shows up, there’s some back-and-forth that includes an attempt to sacrifice Shiera Sanders to Anubis, and Hawkman shoots Hastor dead with a crossbow.

    Don’t worry, he’ll be back!
