Have you seen any of these aliens (and so forth)? Onees: The Onees are a light-sensitive underground-dwelling race that, this being the Marvel Universe, have probably been retroactively declared some type of Deviant subspecies. Whatever they are, they have a plan: to pull all the iron on the surface of the Earth underground with their suction-ray and use it to throw the planet into an orbit further from the sun, thus allowing them to conquer the newly-dim planet. Their unnamed…

GENERIC COSTUMED VILLAIN ROUND-UP 047

We’ve gone back to revisit some comics I read early on in this project, which means that I get to slap my forehead and yell “why did I skip that guy?” every five minutes or so. Here are some of those guys. Samson: Samson is the strongman at the same circus that Toro is a part of when the Human Torch finds him. As such he is preloaded with one of the two possible strongman personalities: criminally arrogant or very…

MONSTER, CRITTER AND CREATURE ROUND-UP 006

It is once again time for some monsters. And critters and creatures, of course. Tyrannosaurus and Gigantosaurus: Discovered as eggs in the Siberian permafrost, these dinosaurs are hatched, raised and put on display by circus impresario Barney Bailey and break out of their cages in a panic thanks to a record-breaking thunderstorm. They rampage across the skyline for a time (and devour Barney Bailey in the process), but alas for the science of paleontology in the Marvel Universe, both are…

HERO/VILLAIN UPDATE 005/003: THE HUMAN TORCH VS THE SUB-MARINER 1940

HERO/VILLAIN UPDATE 005/003: THE HUMAN TORCH VS THE SUB-MARINER 1940

(Marvel Mystery Comics v1 008, 1940) The Sub-Mariner is very annoyed that the State of New York tried to execute him for all the murders he did before declaring himself a good guy. His response? An attempt to conquer and/or destroy New York City, which incidentally means doing a lot more murders. Enter newly-fledged rookie police officer cum officially sanctioned municipal vigilante the Human Torch to stop him. It’s not the first instance of two comic book heroes meeting each…

Despite the wide number of different aliens that we have covered thusfar, there are so many aliens left to go! Dragon-Men: These Dragon-Men of the planet Ligra, or at least their leader King Jago, have ambitions to rule the entirety of their world, and so ambush and capture Electro and Professor Zog in order to use them as war machines against the hated Lion-Men. (Marvel Mystery Comics v1 008, 1940) Though Professor Zog is a firm believer in freedom over…

SUPER-VILLAIN 003 UPDATE: NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER 1940

SUPER-VILLAIN 003 UPDATE: NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER 1940

When we last saw Namor the Sub-Mariner he had decided to renounce his vow to war upon the surface and instead be a good guy, and the State of New York had reasonably responded with, “Okay, but what about the people you killed while you were a bad guy?” and then Namor essentially just nodded and said, “Exactly. I was a bad guy and now I’m a good guy so it’s all cool.” and then they put him on trial…

Production on these Media in Comics showcases must sadly slow down now, for I have worked my way through my backlog. As evidence of this, today we are showcasing some magical books, which are genrally unique items that fall under nobody’s definition of mass media but which I want to include anyway, for fun’s sake. Books of Magic: You all remember the fabled Black Book of Sorcery that the wicked Egyptologist Ford committed all those murders for, well here it…

PROBLEMATIC ROUND-UP 009

It it the nature of comic books that we will always be doing Problematic Updates. Dr Finkle: Dr Finkle himself is nothing special: he’s a psuedo-Nazi teamed up with the pseudo-Japanese Matsui in a scheme to steal securities belonging to Axis-conquered countries that are held in America. The real issue lies with Finkle’s primary agents, who you may notice being referred to as “Indian Monsters” in the final panel above. These “Indian Monsters” are straight out of something like Bone…

Can you tell that I’ve hit the “M” portion of my aliens spreadsheet Martians: These very humanoid Martians have a whole series of problems:  1. some heavenly object is due to smash into their planet  2. they are bad at science 3. when they turned to Earth to look for help with their problem the only person they could get to help them was this jerk named Ritton, who intends to cash in his Mars favour for help in taking…
